No Tolls In Texas
A new toll discount program that allows a select group of veterans to drive toll-free on Central Texas toll roads has been overwhelmingly approved.  The new toll free discount program, which goes into effect on November 1, 2018, will allow qualified veterans to drive toll-free on interstate 183A toll, the 290 toll, the 71 toll lane, and the future 183 South and state highway 45SW toll roads.  Under Texas law, toll authorities are allowed to offer discounted or waived tolls for certain classes of veterans.  For instance, disabled veterans and Legion of Valor or Medal of Honor recipients will be allowed to drive toll-free. Texas House Bill 3139 was passed September 1, 2009 after veterans said they were having difficulty affording travel to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical facilities.  All eligible veterans who wish to participate in the toll discount program will be required to register with the agency using the online portal on their website.

UPDATE (May 7, 2019):   Hoping to corral ballooning costs of a program that waives tolls for disabled veterans on Texas Department of Transportation toll roads, state lawmakers are crafting legislation to limit the number of vehicles veterans can drive for free.

Lawmakers worry that some veterans may be taking advantage of the program, acquiring plates eligible for free tolls for multiple vehicles. According to testimony at a Texas House Defense and Veterans Affairs Committee hearing recently, 719 veterans have five or more plates and two veterans have 11 such plates.
